People Who Roc – Sheryl Swoopes

Originally airing on my first online tv show, this clip was part of a series created in celebration of both Black HIstory Month (February) and Women’s History Month (March). I had the pleaseure of attending the National Black Lesbian Conference in 2005 held by the Zuna Institute. While there I went to a workshop by my now good friend, Angela Harvey. In her workshop Angela stressed the importance of being out and the impact it has on our community. She explained that by the world seeing that we are everywhere, in all facets of life, we can begin to break down barriers of ignorance, unacceptance and fear all which ultimately lead to anti-gay sentiments and feed homophobia. Well, sitting across from me in this workshop was Sheryl Swoopes and her partner Scottie. Shortly after the conference Sheryl came out and has referenced Angela’s workshop as one of the catalysts for doing so. It took great courage and selflessness to come out when she did and I really admire her for that.

It was only fitting that my homie Rob, a Dallas Hoop-it-Up all star and masculine identified lesbian, help me pay tribute Sheryl Swoopes.
